GTA 6: Release Date Confirmed For Grand Theft Auto
As we wait for news about the game, take heed: developer Rockstar Games could have unintentionally let information slip about the future prospects and timeline for GTA 6. Job posting from Rockstar Leeds hints at the development of their new action-adventure game, which is rumoured to be in development.
It has been almost six years since the release of Grand Theft Auto 5, leaving many wondering when they will hear news about a new iteration in the franchise. No official word has been released, but leaks have suggested its impending announcement as we continue to speculate what GTA 6 features, missions and cars we may see.
Along with this, there have been multiple hints and clues that Grand Theft Auto 6 could be on its way in the near future. Here's everything we know about GTA 6's impending announcemen
What Is The Job Role And Why Is It Relevant To GTA 6?
A new job advert, which was posted on recruitment website Monster, states that Rockstar Leeds are looking for an "Environment Artist". The job spec requires that those who apply will be responsible for "creating and texturing enviornment assets for the biggest and best open world environment in the industry".
Rockstar Leeds have been well known for their supporting work on the GTA PlayStation Portable titles such as Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories and Chinatown Wards. They have also assisted Rockstar North with the development of GTA 5. It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume this role will work directly with the development of GTA 6, given the studio's history.
With other titles such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Bully 2 looming, it would be naive to rule these games out of the running for the role.
When Will GTA 6 Release?
If this job listing hints to what we think it does, we could see GTA 6 released as early as November 2020.
The listing also reads "Join our team to create next-generation worlds". Naturally, one would have to assume they are talking about Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Project Scarlett. It would an interesting development to go from hearing nothing to having a date set in stone so soon with very little being revealed about the next generation of consoles; we do also need to be open minded that the term "next-generation" could be an expression and not necessarily hint at the new console line-up.
GTA 5 primarily released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 before being rereleased on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 a year later - would we see something similar occur?
What Other GTA 6 Rumours Are There?
We're Heading Back To Vice City & Liberty City On PS5 & Project Scarlett
GTA 6 has reportedly been in development since 2012, but wasn’t in the production line until the middle of 2015. Developed under the codename, PROJECT AMERICAS, GTA 6 is set in both Vice City and a new fictional location based on Rio de Janeiro. Liberty City will also make an appearance.
JackOLantern1982 didn’t specify a release date, but claimed the game is only in the Pre-Alpha phase. He also states the game is built for next-gen consoles/PC only - with the PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett being set for release in 2020, that looks fairly likely. His source of information comes from two friends who work for Kotaku and PC Gamer as well as non-verbal “confirmation” from a friend at Rockstar.
Jason Schreier, news editor at Kotaku replied to the post “Yeah this is fake”.
Map Leak
Another leak emerged from the GTAForums, where once again the notion of working across Vice City and Liberty City came up; focusing heavily on drug smuggling and Cartels across multiple time periods.
The locations that the game is rumoured to be set in are:
- Liberty City (Limited Area)
- Vice City (Main City)
- Rio de Neve, South America (Rio de Janeiro, Main City)
- Republic of Castellano, South America (Mix of Bolivia and Colombia, Main City)
- Minor Cities
- People's Republic of del Castro, Central America (Fictional Central American island based on Panama and Cuba, Island)
- Mexico (Mexico, Limited Area)
- Prologue: 1978
- Main Story: 1980s
- Epilogue: Present Day
GTA Online is also mentioned where players can join other story modes as a member of their crew and is set in the 1980s
Red Dead Redemption 2 Banner Removed
Rockstar North removed the RDR2 banner hanging above their offices, which could indicate they're preparing for a new game announcement. There were emerging rumours that suggested it could be pointing to Bully 2, however it was recently confirmed that this game is not in the works.
City Morgue Tease GTA Release Date?
A new Rockstar project has been teased for the Summer of 2020, many predicting to be GTA 6, thanks to the American hip hop group City Morgue. City Morgue teased on their Instagram story that they will be collaborating with Rockstar Games on an unnamed project in the Summer of 2020.
